Case 5 - Citizenship and Leadership

A local newspaper prints an article that is very negative about chiropractic, and contains several mistakes and misrepresentations about the chiropractic profession. Discuss with your group members whether and how to confront challenges to chiropractic such as this. Could you keep a “cool head” to discuss issues? If so, with whom should the discussions take place? Should you avoid the discussion?

Use Kinsinger’s Case Analysis Methodology (pages 55-57 in the text) in discussing with your group the issues and implications of this case as well as potential actions you may take. Post a summary of your team’s comments to the blog before noon on Wednesday, January 11.

Case 4 - Boundaries and Liabilities

You’re in 9th trimester and sitting with other 9th-tri friends in your apartment house when one of them says to another “Go ahead and adjust me. You know how to do it and you don’t need to be supervised” (adjusting without authorization is not allowed at Palmer College).

Use Palmer Student Code of Ethics (Rights and Responsibilities section of the Student Handbook) and Kinsinger’s three virtues of integrity (pages 40-41) in discussing the issues and implications of this situation with your group. Post a summary of your team’s comments to the blog before noon on Wednesday, January 4 and remember to include your group's number.

Thanks and have a wonderful holiday break!

Case 3 - Formal Codes of Ethics

Consider the following Buddhist quote:
"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.

But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."

Some believe that ethics cannot be taught and that everyone learns what is acceptable behavior at a young age. Discuss with your group whether we are truly left on our own to determine right and wrong or whether a set of standards or other mechanisms guides us. Does this quote support or encourage an individual's responsibility to a formal code of ethics? Post a summary of your team’s comments to the blog before noon on Wednesday, December 14. Please remember to include your group's number in your post. Thanks and have a great weekend!

Case 2 - Moral Relativism

In Kinsinger’s text (pages 13-14), review the “Cultural Concerns” section on moral relativism and then read the following article about the Penn State case: http://blog.pennlive.com/davidjones/2011/11/inaction_of_paterno_mcqueary_b.html

Discuss with your group how this case illustrates moral relativism as outlined by Kinsinger. Is it acceptable for professional standards of right and wrong to vary from one person to the next? Why or why not? Submit a blog post focused on how the actions or inactions of either Joe Paterno or Mike McQueary demonstrate moral relativism. Also, your group’s thoughts on what impacts Paterno’s or McQueary’s decisions will have (both short- and long-term).

Post a summary of your team’s comments to the blog before noon on Wednesday, December 7 and remember to include your team’s number--thanks!

Read the short online bio of Elizabeth “Sister” Kenny at http://www.teachspace.org/personal/research/poliostory/sisterkenny.html

Then watch the video clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyzg-4Z5G2I&feature=related (cut and paste this URL into your browser)

Discuss with your group how Kenny demonstrates professionalism. Post a summary of your team’s comments to the blog before noon on Wednesday, November 30.

Rights and Responsibilities - Fall/Winter 2011 - 2012

Welcome to the class! Among your first courses, Rights and Responsibilities focuses on ethical and behavioral standards within the chiropractic profession. Students enrolled in the Rights and Responsibilities course will use this blog to share viewpoints and perspectives based on their consideration of specific situations and cases.

Each week, a brief case or situation will be presented on the blog. Working in assigned five-member teams, students will review and discuss the case (via email, face-to-face, FB, cell, etc.) to share their opinions and rationale. One member of every team will be assigned each week to take a turn summarizing the group's input and posting to the blog.

The resulting online interaction is intended to encourage and enrich student understanding of professional standards and responsibilities. In posting comments, students are expected to offer mature commentary, reasonable rationale for opinions, and respect for others' viewpoints.
